The Flags of Vreewijk Project includes the activities and the results of a workshop with members of the community of Vreewijk, Rotterdam South. Together, we translated community stories into symbols and a series of five flags, made to be flown at various locations around the neighbourhood. And from APRIL 9th to MAY 29th, a sixth flag will fly on The Pole. Sewn from the scraps of the other flags, it will move from one community to the next — like fragments of conversations; tail ends of stories told; details spilled over, but not lost to the wind.Vreewijk is a garden village in Rotterdam South, built after world war two to house the labour force that would rebuild the city. It is often studied by architectural and urban design students as a model of communal infrastructure. The Flags of Vreewijk Project is part of a larger research project, called Conversation Journal, that is organised by Janneke Derksen and Eros Chien and is supported by Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie.
———Jack Bardwell (UK, 1990) is an artist and designer based in Rotterdam whose work focuses on creating space for collaboration and the strengthening of cultural scenes and communities. Through a combination of functional infrastructure, narrative building and performance his projects manipulate the everyday to speculate on possible near futures. Making radio is a large part of his current work. As well helping set up numerous independent internet radio stations, he is the co-creator of Good Times Bad Times radio in Rotterdam and Mushroom Radio, the student-run station at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) where he hosts Group Therapy a peer-to-peer project support group for graduating master’s students.

. . . entities that might be dreaming us into being, or mourning our forgetfulness.and
All ritual eventually leads to transformation.Somewhere in the middle of my conversation with the geographer, he mentions that the stones are thought to have originally been reddish in color – that they may have been chosen for that precise reason.I stop him and gently press a bit, “Why would red stones have been preferable?”He gestures behind his desk to a large framed photograph of the giant megaliths arranged like long tables, tombs, or even temples, “Well, I mean, could the dolmens have been intended for blood sacrifice? Moon or menstrual ceremony? Are they intended to mark some deep water enigma or the threshold to another realm? We will never know. These ice rafted erratics are the oldest elements of this land, older than the soil itself. Stones brought by ancient glaciers, and later arranged for some unknown purpose. Red is a life force color – indeed, red would point to the possibility that this truly was a ritual landscape.” Later in the evening, I cycle northwest and walk towards the stones. The lowering sun hits them, just as it has day after day for five thousand years. I lie down awkwardly by these formations, drawn to rest. Despite an uneasy solitude, I begin to drift to sleep in this remote forest…and earth remembers me, she takes me back so tenderly.*

That might resemble speech”. So begins the opening section of “Dictée” by writer and artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. Cha was born in Busan, Korea, in a refugee camp during the war in 1951 and emigrated to the US at the age of twelve, in 1962. She studied art and comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley from 1969 to 1978; her work includes performances, film, video and artist books. In 1982 she was raped and murdered by a security guard in New York; a week later “Dictée” was published.

_____Adele Dipasquale (Italy, 1994) is a visual artist currently based in Den Haag (NL), where she has recently graduated from the MA Artistic Research at the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK). Her work is mainly constituted by moving images, analog film, photography, voice and writing. Her practice deals with the politics of language and the relationship between magical thought and words. Her research starts from a deep inquiry of the power of naming: how words produce worlds and how language divides things into categories and thus allows for certain things to exist and not for others. In this process, she tries to look for strategies of refusal and, possibly, reparation from normative definitions and taxonomies.

The Pole, Rotterdam (formerly The Pole, Den Haag) was an artist-run un-definite exhibition space located at the end of a flag pole — outside, at Pompstraat 40. It approached artists, works, and exhibition making informally and wondered aloud what each needed and tried to give it to them. The Pole supported

from November 2018 ‘til May 2022.

The Pole was organized by Katrina Niebergal.

___Stephan Wright is working on an input-output composition. The input is: live stream video — from a webcam, for example, set up in his living room, maybe pointing out his window (fields of view within fields of view) overlooking Vancouver (the city, harbour, mountains; most importantly, the sky), maybe running AI detection software, recognizing and misidentifying flying objects: airplanes, helicopters, passing clouds, crows . . . &nbsp;and its pre-recorded or live or found and ripped audio recordings; photographs; snippets of video shot on daily wanderings; 3D animations . . . Heaps of material. With this material, Stephan is making arrangements — building context from combined contexts — setting up an amalgamated digital space which, over the course of the exhibition, he will modify, shape, construct and reconstruct. This digital space will be live streamed and available (for you) to drop into — here: the output. The digital space also refers, in multifaceted ways (some palpable and poetic more than logical), to the work on The Pole flying outside Pompstraat 40-B — which is kind of like a portal, and/or spatial plane, and/or projection screen; something like a net (which captures things (captures: in the photographic sense of the word)).

Ten of Moods marks the completion of a cycle, taking one hard look at the past in order to emancipate possible futures. It appears at dusk, when the day’s work is over and shadow-seeking worlds begin to unfold; when light captures and holds our deepest thoughts and desires. Through systems of representation and numerology we can investigate what the future holds. The two artists share an interest in the Tarot; it’s forms of progression and numerology, taking them as tools to be placed in relation to their separate practices. The works presented are current cycles seeking representation in shadow play, repeatedly going from darkness to light as we go through shapes and shifts — adjusting our aspirations to the surroundings every time. Is there an end destination?
Let your eyes adjust to dimly roam around and participate in the cycles of Á. Birna Björnsdóttir and Bergur Anderson.

Á. BIRNA BJÖRNSDÓTTIR (IS) is a visual artist based in Amsterdam. She graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2016 and has since developed her practice through research, collaboration and creation of works for diverse settings and platforms. In her work Birna questions the daily assumptions that many, including herself, are guilty of in our engagement with the material world and the forces around us. She questions a certain preoccupation with the solid and the factual and the structures this way of thinking has brought about. Frequently engaging smartphones in her work as characters or digital prosthetics, her works navigate between worlds of various materialities. At the moment Birna is busy growing a different kind of prosthetic, a phantom limb with which she hopes to explore things previously imperceptible.Birna’s works have been exhibited by the Reykjavík Art Museum, Cosmos Carl project space, the Living Art Museum, The North Atlantic House, at7 project space and Sequences art festival. Next to her independent practice Birna has co-initiated platforms for art such as the summer camp/collective Laumulistasamsteypan, at7 project space and GSM exhibition space in frequencies.

BERGUR ANDERSON is a Rotterdam-based artist from Reykjavík, Iceland; whose practice is essentially concerned with the relationship between the singing voice and the speaking voice; past and ongoing modes of storytelling; and the agency polyphony has in constructing oral narratives. He works primarily with sound, performance and installation, fabricating the ephemera and fictional qualities of orality into material, time-based and published works.Bergur's work has been presented in Harbinger and Mengi in Reykjavík; PuntWG and project space at7 in Amsterdam; Rib, Rotterdam; and Kaunas Artist House in Lithuania. Recent releases and collaborations include Operating manual for floating in space, an LP made with artist Mylan Hoezen; and Singing Club of Rotterdam and Audience at Antenne, a tape of live vocal explorations at Rotterdam's favorite bedroom venue. Night Time Transmissions, his first solo album, will be released in the autumn of 2021 on Futura Resistenza.berguranderson.info

Ecstasy maker
heavens conductor
harbinger
done wrong.
How about just a very simple swoosh swoosh swoosh
to dust the cobwebs off
of serially strange times
now, I mean, and reaching back
to simultaneously remember
and forget —
like magic.

The flag has two images: the skeletal structure of a foot, and a diagram of lunar phases as they relate to the position of the earth. These two parts of the flag turn on and off in relation to the sun. What I mean is, the foot is printed with a glow in the dark medium that is mainly visible at night; the diagram is printed in UV reactive ink — invisible until hit by the sun, turning blue. When you stand on the street and look up into the night sky you will see a glowing foot beside the light of the stars.

~Zebulon Zang is an artist and filmmaker from Maillardville, Canada. His work is an ongoing investigation into the development and impact of mechanical reproduction, and its role in shifting fundamental aspects of experience, knowledge production, and historiography.&nbsp; His projects focus on the phenomenological and social implications created by technological methods of seeing and remembering, with subjects ranging from the death masks of antiquity, to the data driven digital imaging of today. His work has been exhibited throughout North America and Asia, and has been supported by the B.C. Arts Council, The Russell Foundation, and The University of California. His debut feature film N.O.N. was screened as part of the 2018 Vancouver International Film Festival.

Annemarie WadlowKatrina's Room: moonbeams, to negotiate a better arrangementThe Pole, Den HaagMarch 9, 2020 – April 8, 2020

<img width="7991" height="1200" width_o="7991" height_o="1200" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/22f28f9090eb4d2f0ed4b481dfc95be3b9802f150f6305c25a10fd1710403606/AMW_Katrina-s-Room_PR-photo_01.jpg" data-mid="1075631" border="0" />
The passing of centuries took with it an altarpiece. It commemorates a woman who lived a life bound tight to religion and morals, yet who was unable to escape spilling out of herself from time to time; flying outside of her body; ripping through; rippling in ecstasy. The altarpiece was manipulated into a video: 5 channels of seductive slowness. The woman, Catherine, destined to stay within her chamber for all her remaining days; eyes still upon her as she goes about her daily rituals, her repetitive, meditative performance suspends her in an eternal, cyclical present. And he who made her decided she should live a life of pure devotion, inside a room that alludes appearance, and disappearance.Trapped in the centuries, she now enters a new cycle. The super Worm Moon re-sets. Cawing of crows signaling the end of winter, she is disentangled from your appearances, unraveled from the mirage, escaping from your surface and image. For, has she ever been anything but your dream of midday or midnight? She falls back into a depth of thought: that goes right to the bottom of things, beyond appearances; difficult to penetrate because it is more internal, more secret, but also more durable. For now, she takes her devotion into her own hands; handling her cycle carefully and illuminating the shadows around her as she turns. She turns. Turns her back and turns her front.Did you forget that she is always looking back at you?And now she lives for a short while here; looking out with an eye in two directions, while you look in. She invites you in; a mesh of possibilities, gaps, overlaps. Reflecting back at you in the slippery light. And you all had to lose sight of me so I could come back, toward you, with another gaze.. . . Including a selection of words and sentences fromMarine Lover of Friedrich Nietzsche, Luce Irigaray&amp; Tendencies, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick.~Annemarie Wadlow (UK, 1993) is an artist working with photography and video. She investigates the beguiling space perched in the muddle between the image and the imagined.

1 / 4:I’VE GOT A FIRE THAT BURNS ALL NIGHT FOR YOU (BABY)FOR, IN THE BEGINNING ALL WAS FIRE,AND,HAVING THUS FAR RECEIVED NO MEMO REGARDING THE END OF THE BEGINNING,I CAN ONLY DEDUCE ALL STILL IS.THE SMELL OF A FIRE IS THE DIGESTION OF ITS DINNER,THE SCENT OF A BONFIRE IS THE STENCH OF NEPOTISM.I WON’T RESENT ITS PROMOTION.BUT COULD YOU, WOOD YOU, HELP ME TOO?COS THIS FIRE HAS NO APPETITE, IT BURNS AT BOTH ENDS.OH, IT COULDN’T CARE LESSBECAUSE ANGER IS ITS ENERGY —BUT ALSO JOY, SADNESS AND THE OTHER ONES TOO;NUANCED.NOT JUST A HOTTIE,A COMPLICATED FELLOW.THIS FIRE SMELLS OF CLOSE, HOT BREATH, SWEETENED WITH GENTLY INFLAMED TONSILS,SELF-CONTAINED INFECTION,SMOULDERING AWAY,KEPT AT BAYWITH ORANGES.FIRE ON A STICK, TO BE SOLD AT THE FAIR,BURNING FLAGS, FLAMING TORCHES, FLUTTERING MATCHES.CONTROLLED BURNS PREVENT WILD FIRES.HAMMOCKED IN SCALDING TENDRILS,I AWAIT THE PHOENIX.

2 / 4:

Within that chronic flame were worlds and chambers,
boardrooms and grottos,
populated by your hot, your bothered, your huddled masses,
waiting for someone to crack a window.

Sensing a gap, quick as oil, only slicker,
this guy from the corner of your eye
is out and tumbling.
Reverse Icarus,
just as scalded.

The unhappy meeting of objects in space
left hanging.
Waiting for the cool moon’s salve
to bathe the livid cells of his curs-ed little body.
Brief respite from the itching, tingling hate.
Was it something I said,
or something his grandmother ate?

Become a sign through sheer, dumb presence,
Creak in the breeze.

Sorry, are you still open?

Here there be monsters.

3 / 4:

The loves of teenage girls
so roundly discredited,
(apart from The Beatles, Elvis, and whatever papa later venerated)
based on the promises decoded
from a curl on the brow;
pin-up for the ages;
cipher of now.

At the strike of one,
that ghost arrives
— having hawked his noble steed for a hybrid car —
sees the beast tangled in your stars,
thinks he should dislodge it.

He croons of
the good, the bad, and the binary.
The only grey area being
his metal finery.
Which prevents slings and arrows of any depth

penetrating.

Hey, I don’t wanna upset you baby, but I should say,
your idols, they have feet of clay.
You’d have found out sooner or later, even if I'da smashed those toes to bits for you,
marmalised them with thuds into mud
so you never even knew they had ‘em.

'Cos pottery is eternal baby
— you ever been to a museum?!

Mesopotamia, baby, their morsels still knock about.
Babylonia, my darling, they’re still finding out.
Even if the dinosaurs had made 'em, baby, I tell you, they’d still linger
(though they’d be shit; no delicacy in a t-rex finger).

Basically, what I’m saying, baby, is don’t meet your heroes.

For,
I suspect your champion choice is poor.

But,
don’t mewl, don’t fret, don’t stew,
you’ve got me now
— you’ll want no more.

'Cos I'm offering:
a head for romance
and a heart for business.

p.s. you’re welcome.

BUT THE WIND CAN CHANGE ITS KNOTS
